could it be done less perfect – less round and the lines less straight, say more organic?

yes, put it inside a GLSL vertex noise shader and you’re good to go.

aahh nice. Have you ever heard of FFD transformations, such as those inside 3dsmax transformations – it builds a 3d grid (cube or not) around the object and through the control points allows you to deform the objects, have you ever done such a plugz?….

yeah, I know FFD very well. I think this is totally doable within a GLSL shader.
